The Lifespan of Storage Media

storage_mediaAs each new form of data storage comes on the scene, the market is at first enamored with its compactness, convenience and hoped-for data longevity. But invariably, the reality of physical vulnerability and a limited lifespan remains. Eventually, all media fails, but Cloud backup is forever.

Roofception: Sky Garden House Takes Green to New Levels

sky-garden-stairs-roofStuck in a small lot with nosy neighbors? No worries: just built up instead of out, like the architects of this home on the remote island Sentosa (near Singapore).

Guz Architects‘ plan was, in part, to create something that felt like a one-story dwelling but sat up above the neighbors, treating the first floor like a basement (conceptually) and the second story with its green deck like a main-floor house and garden, with yet a third story and green roof on that.

A central stair and atrium channel light, breezes and occupants up and down through the core, connecting a sublime terrace above with the more secluded living spaces below.

None of this focus on the upper levels is meant to suggest the actual entry floor was not well-designed, with its own secluded outdoor space as well as relatively-small exterior deck leading out to the water’s edge.

How to Brand Yourself [infographic]

brandingAlright, alright, alright, it’s Monday and time to get this week under way, whether you want to or not. I’ve got a pretty cool infographic for ya’ll today, How People Look in Google and How to Look Better. Now you may be thinking I don’t do much on the internet besides Facebook and the like, there is nothing about me on Google. Well you’d be surprised, after I Googled myself then did an internet search I found there were several links relating to me and stuff I had done that I had no idea was on the internet. None of it is bad of course, being the saint that I am, but it was interesting to find things I had done back in Middle School posted on the internet.

Lucky for me the content that appears when I Google myself is positive but that is because of a conscious effort. When it comes to Google rankings the one link you should be truly concerned about is your top hit. However only half of people own their first link on a Google search with 1 in 4 having no positive content on their first page. If you’re a professional concerned with your image Linkedin is your best friend. It ranks highest in Google so you can provide that clean innocent image using that guy. Be careful with things like Youtube and Vimeo, even though Youtube is more popular Vimeo ranks higher. Everything you do on the internet really is archived. Be careful people and don’t say I didn’t warn you. [via]

SkyDrive Gets a Major Redesign [video]

SkydriveGreat news for SkyDrive users: Microsoft has revamped SkyDrive with a more modern Metro-style design (alright, "Windows 8"-like design), added a bunch of new features, and finally announced an Android dedicated app is on the way.

The new interface brings a tile-based layout to your files and folders, complete with support for dragging-and-dropping multiple files. (Don’t worry, you can still access the normal details view.) A new contextual toolbar should make working with folders and docs quicker, and finding your files should be easier too with the new instant search. One handy feature is the customized sorting settings—so you can save your preference for arranging files by date created, modified, or saved on a folder-by-folder basis.

An official SkyDrive app for Android phones is finally coming—"in just a few weeks," according to the SkyDrive blog post. As with the Windows Phone and iOS apps, the Android SkyDrive app will give you access to your SkyDrive files on the go.

Desktop SkyDrive apps are also faster and more efficient now, especially when it comes to bulk photo uploading and syncing recent changed files.

Perhaps the best news buried in the announcement is that Microsoft is working on a "choosing what to sync" option. This means you’ll (most likely) be able to selectively sync certain folders or files, rather than maxing out your entire SkyDrive storage space. This is still a "stay tuned" feature, though.
