How to Take Your Indoor Decorating Style Outside

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 7.45.03 AMExtend the color, style and atmosphere of your rooms into your garden for a cohesive look that bridges inside and out

Any outdoor space, from a small balcony to a spacious garden, can act as an extension of your interior and a valuable extra “room.” Yet often when it comes to decorating it, we head for specialist garden retailers for our furniture and accessories. An alternative is simply to take your interior decorating style out into the elements, from your living room’s color scheme to the decorative touches that pepper your home.

This may involve simply moving pieces that normally live indoors into the garden on fine days, or it could mean sourcing items specifically for exteriors, just not necessarily from a specialist garden shop. So stay true to your decorating style by taking the inside out. These 12 inspiring exteriors show how well that approach can work.

12 Genius Design Moves for Small Kitchens

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 7.43.01 AMThese space-enhancing tricks can make compact cooking zones look and feel larger

Is your kitchen lovely and large, or is it on the smaller side? If it falls into the latter group, I can sympathize. I spent the better part of last year living in a studio apartment with a single-wall kitchen that was a measly 32 square feet (3 square meters). However, it wasn’t the shortage of square footage that was the problem, but rather that the cooking zone wasn’t the smartest, most efficient or space-savviest of kitchen designs. (For instance, it had no usable work area, as the sink and cooktop took up pretty much all of the countertop space.)

Since I was only renting the apartment, I couldn’t renovate the area, but that didn’t stop me from mentally writing a list of improvements I’d make if given the chance. Here are some of the design tricks I would have used to transform the spatially challenged kitchen into a cooking zone that was big on functionality, space-maximizing solutions and visual appeal, and that offered the illusion of spaciousness, too. Borrow these ideas when tackling your own cramped-kitchen makeover or, if you’ve successfully revamped a compact cooking zone for the better, share your must-try design moves in the Comments section.

Kitchen Recipes: Factory Cart Inspires a Dream Cooking Space

Screen Shot 2015-05-26 at 2.23.45 PMThese homeowners’ kitchen was almost nonexistent, so they whipped it up from scratch. See what they cook there and get the recipe too

Many creative types need a space: Artists have a studio, tinkerers have a workshop, actors have a stage. If you are a creator, then your surroundings are likely to be interesting. That’s why we reasoned that people who make masterpieces armed with a sharp chef’s knife (in other words, home cooks) are bound to have unique kitchens as well as tasty recipes. We asked them to share both.

One of the people who responded was Emily Danforth, an author in Providence, Rhode Island. She and her wife, Erica Edsell, bought a house in the Armory District of that city. Danforth says that over the years, original features had been removed in the 115-year-old Gothic revival home and it had fallen into severe disrepair. They set out to remodel the space, and the source of their inspiration was a large green factory cart.
