Versatility meets simplicity in this dual-mode shelving object constructed quite simply from two-by-fours and requiring little more than a chop saw (for 45- and 90-degree cuts) and a hammer to build, for the DIY-inclined.
Titled Kulma (the Finnish word for corner), this piece was designed by Martina Carpelan, whose “goal as a designer is to bring function, esthetics and timelessness together, “reflecting her “great interest in observing the everyday, her surroundings and behavior.”
A little painting can go a long way toward transforming the look and feel of a space, so before you change the wallpaper or toss out your old furniture, consider some before-and-after project examples that show how a change in color can liven up a dull space or dampen an overly dramatic one.

The rabbit is already out of the hat, print media is dying. The truth hurts, but we are vastly sprinting to digital media with cloud computing. The ability to read your favorite book, paper, or magazine virtually is mind boggling. However don’t feel too sad, because great things usually get rediscovered. Take for examples retro/vintage design. It’s a very hot trend that’s widely appreciated among the design community. The same thing is bound to happen with bookcase designs.
When you think of a bookshelf the first picture your mind creates is probably a conventional rectangular shape on the wall that has books inside of it. A-Cero is perhaps best known for their architecture (and one-off oddities), but has a knack for statement-making interior designs and furnishings as well – this one-off venture into bathrooms, though, certainly befits their style.
The so-called Spirit Collection created for L’Antic Colonial features a set of interlocking pieces that can be arranged like artwork on the wall – a curved glass mirror, white ceramic sink with an independent metal fixture above and organic stone-faced wooden vanity below.
What is perhaps most interesting here is the transition the designers made from their usual architectural fare, in this case blending emotive originality with modular functionality and mass-market availability.

The uniqueness of “Light Light Lamp” is that its top part levitate above from bottom due to its electromagnetic parts and control system that never let it out from its space. So simple yet so central, a mattress platform provides a basis not just for sleeping in but also for styling an entire bedroom. This combination of beds and bedrooms shows just how powerful a single piece of furniture can be.
Mazzali is your typical Italian design-and-production company insofar as its focus is on sleek minimalist frames, headboards and mattresses, but the group also takes some more daring directions with select pieces (and photographed layouts).
Plug-and-play headboard additions, for instance, turn a bench-plus-daybed set into a sleep-worthy master bed as needed.
In other cases, the underlying frame is still a platform, but its simplicity is hidden behind a sensual curve up the side or underneath.
A frame and a canopy clearly go a long way – but so do color schemes: black and white warm when brown is added to the mix.
Finally, there is something to be said for a bare-bones bedroom set as well – a full or double may suffice where a king or queen cannot fit, or when a guest bed is all that is required.
