Growing Up: Stackable Tree Dressers Go Vertical on Demand

Anyone with a cramped urban apartment knows that sometimes the only way to go is up. And as young people get older and taller, perhaps the best dresser does the same.

Each modular piece fits fine as a stand-alone object set up side by side or around the room (or house) – as desired, however, they also work up to three (perhaps four) units tall.

This system from Chigo clocks in at close to a thousand dollars per unit – more than maybe most people want to spend on their little ones, but there is nothing saying they could not work for adults in tight spaces, too.

Literary Literalism: Bold Bookcase Shaped Like Book Pages

Some books form subtle plots through metaphor and allegory … but if this storage system were a story, it would be blunt and obvious, for better or worse.

The Pagina bookcase from Cassina comes in blue but also more-obvious white, looking very much like pages from a book, particularly when you put the pair of symmetrical sides next to one another.

Though it appears inflexible and domineering, its individual shelves can actually be moved, and the varying depths (shaped by the curving of the front surface) actually allow for a practical arrangement of items based on size. Either way, if your books alone were not enough to show your love of literature, this surely tells the world where your heart lies.

Don’t Waste A Drop With A Plant Holder Dishrack

media_httpfarm8static_CHmAH.jpg.scaled500Those with a particularly acute eco conscience have likely already bid farewell to their energy-wasting dishwasher, but have they really gone the green distance?

Now, one doesn’t have to waste a drop of that rinse water with the Fluidity by DesignLibero.

The water that trickles from the washed dishes irrigates the plants. The base, thanks to its fluid form, directs the wastewater into the sections where are plant containers placed. Each container is perforated at the bottom for water passage. The containers are filled with clay pellets and coconut fiber, to control the water environment of the plant on the one hand and to keep clean the dish drainer base on the other hand.

This might almost making doing the dishes worthwhile, or, barring that, have two pots of dying herbs to serve as some much-needed motivation.

Seattle: Most Indicators Positive

Seattle-Beautiful-View_1600x1200_6029Tech and aerospace industries keep Seattle and surrounding cities competitive with the rest of the nation. Based on data compiled by the Seattle Market Review (March 2012), the Evergreen State shows economic growth with several bright spots.

  • Seattle ranks in the top three for tech startup jobs around the nation, according to PayScale’s “Tech Startup Hotspot Score.” PayScale takes into account median annual pay and availability of new positions. Only San Francisco and Austin beat out the Emerald City, which enjoyed a median salary of $74,900.

  • Boeing is seeing its highest levels of employment since 1999, when 82,400 men and women were employed, according to the News Tribune. At the end of February, the company employed 82,325 workers in Washington and a total of 171,921. The majority of jobs were added in WA, the center of the company’s commercial airplane production and design work.

  • Seattle’s unemployment rate fell to 7.5 percent in January, down from 7.7 percent in the month prior. Overall in the state, unemployment dropped to 8.3 percent.

What does the labor market growth mean for housing? King County’s inventory is shrinking. Fewer homes were listed for sale in February than at any time since the housing crisis started. And while the U.S. median single-family sale price fell by 2 percent in February — to $308,125 — Seattle has fared better. Its median house price went up by 3 percent to $365,000 from February 2011.

Folding coffee table both fashionable and functional

table

If you miss the days when your furniture consisted of two folding chairs and a card table, if for nothing other than the convenience come moving time, thanks to designer Robert van Embricqs, you could get back the flexibility without sacrificing a fashionable look.

A conscious choice for functionality in design doesn’t necessarily mean one has to be burdened by conformity, let alone predictability. The Rising Table ignores the clichéd notion that a table is little more than a flat surface that is held up by four separate legs. The result is a surprising mixture of fluid design that blends the multifaceted tabletop with the latticework of wooden beams that function as the center of the construct. From there, the table sprouts four wooden beams that hold up the entire construct.

Not only does this design approach rid itself of every single predictable feature when one imagines a table, it also emphasizes that the Rising Table is indeed made from a single piece of wood.

It also takes up almost zero space in a moving van, as well as being a snap to hide away once it’s time to whip out the impromptu dance floor after taking out the huge plate of dippable goodies that could be placed in the middle. This is nothing if not a party waiting to happen.

Shelving on Demand: Modular Ledges Flip Up & Down

Empty shelves can look strange or sad, leading us to try and fill them up … sometimes too fast. The solution? Modular fold-down wall shelves.

These work for books, but are more meant for odds and ends or decorative touches – the quick-but-temporary cleanup we do from time to time between bigger organizational efforts or the elements we want to show off.

Eeva Lithovius suggests that the shelf can serve as a kind of “chaos meter” reflecting its capacity quite openly and letting you know when it might be time to get more shelving … or to toss some things out.

Transformer Cupboard – Hides Table and Seating for Two

While Brazil and Argentina used to be the leaders in the Latin American design scene, other countries from the region like Chile and Uruguay have been catching up, the latter in part thanks to government support and the work of achamber established in 2008 to promote the work of local creators.

Also from the latter comes designer Claudio Sibile, sure to become a favorite ofsmall-spaces-obsessed people with his brilliant transformer furniture.

The first we want to highlight is Ludovico, a cupboard that hides a table and seating for two in a simple, contemporary design made with eucalyptus wood and aluminum handles. Watch it unfold below.

The designer also made a second, smaller version of the piece which turns a three-drawer cupboard in a desk and chair.
