Iron Man 3: Tony Stark’s Incredible House

iron_man_house_by_trung_tiger

Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) is one of the coolest movie characters on the big screen. Millions went to see him this past weekend (May 3rd) for the debut of Iron Man 3. Since this is a real estate blog, what’s the story behind that spectacular house?

[pb_vidembed title=”” caption=”” url=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke1Y3P9D0Bc” type=”yt” w=”680″ h=”385″]

Here are five interesting facts about the superhero’s ultramodern dwelling.

  1. The residence was inspired by a real-life home designed by the famous architect Wallace E. Cunningham. The 11,000-square-foot house in La Jolla, California is called “The Razor” and took six years to build. It was completed in 2008 and features white polished concrete with spectacular panoramic windows designed to embrace sweeping ocean views. Did you think Tony would settle for anything less?
  2. The Razor sold for about $14 million. In the movies, however, Stark lives in Malibu where the same home (if it existed there) might be valued at approximately $40 million.
  3. The Razor has been used in commercials for Calvin Klein and Visa. Do you think Tony uses those brands? Just wondering.
  4. Stark’s house is depicted on a cliff near Point Dume, which is a state park. So it would be impossible to live in that actual spot. However, if Tony lived somewhere nearby, he might have celebrity neighbors like Barbra Streisand, Pamela Anderson, Owen Wilson, and Kenny G.
  5. The movie previews seem to indicate the bad guys do major damage to Tony’s home. Perhaps this time the home will be ruined forever.

It makes sense Stark would be attracted to a hyper-modern home with breathtaking views on a private mountain hill. Considering he’s already saved the world twice, I say he deserves it.

Micro Condo: New York Loft Makes 425 Sq Ft Feel Spacious

If necessity is the mother of invention, then the absence of space is the father of good architecture. It is nothing short of amazing what can be down with limited square footage when the demand is high enough.

Specht Harpman Architects had an award, mostly-vertical volume to work with but managed to turn each indentation and extrusion in the space into a dual-purpose design opportunity.

The bed lofts out over the living room below, while the bathroom and a series of storage spaces are tucks under the staircase, yet these moves make it all feel more dynamic rather than cramped.

Of course, if all else fails, it never hurts to have a top-floor rooftop deck to walk out onto in Manhattan, either.

Bathroom Remodel: From Dated Southwestern to Serene Minimalism

amazing_bathroomWhen a Cleveland couple saw this house, their imaginations ran wild … yet minimalist. Its original style was Southwestern, not to their modern tastes, but it had great bones. The renovation, designed by architect Ryan Duebber, included a bathroom that inspires moments of Zen (in fact, a wall-mounted TV near the tub means the homeowners can enjoy that segment of The Daily Show while taking a soak).Natural materials, a simplified color scheme with strong textural contrasts, an extended vaulted ceiling, more storage and a new layout add up to a minimalist retreat designed for two. Sneak a little break from whatever you’re working on and let this bathroom daydream take you away.Bathroom at a Glance

The existing vaulted ceiling and large window make the room feel spacious, which Duebber enhanced with a minimalist approach and a thoughtful layout. He made the most of the big view by placing the freestanding bathtub in front of the window.

The bathtub sits on a platform made of Brazilian massaranduba wood. “The platform elevates the tub so that they can enjoy the view, and creates a moment of contrast between the wood and stone,” Duebber says. Massaranduba is used for outdoor decking and can stand up to water splashing over the sides.

Industrial Materials Create a Low-Impact Home

Building a residence in the flight path of a nearby airport would be intimidating to a lot of families, but one couple trusted just such a project to East Hampton, NY-based Maziar Behrooz Architecture.

The Arc House plays on the lot’s proximity to the airport by using industrial building techniques. The visually striking sloped roof resembles an airplane hangar and houses all of the home’s public areas.

The living, dining and kitchen areas are all snugly contained beneath the curved roof, making each area feel far roomier than one might expect from such an intimate space.

Air circulation was a particular concern in all parts of the home, so ample windows allow for both sunlight and air to permeate every room. The arc shape of the home and the materials used to create it all significantly cut down on the energy used, making it a beautifully eco-friendly abode.

Just beneath the kitchen and living areas, the lower level contains an office, home gym, sitting area, garage and private courtyard. The suspended staircase leading down to the lower level is one of the showcases of this impressive abode.

A long hallway connects the public area of the house to the bedrooms, which are in an adjacent flat-roofed structure. The architects used materials that would leave open the option to add on extra bedrooms if the couple so desires in the future. See it here.

Old House Designed with Minimalist Modules

New houses give architects a blank slate to work with, but a far more common question is: what does one do with an existing structure and limited budget?

Rather than revamp the floor plan, modify the walls or refit new windows, Sepka Architekti took an additive approach to this remodel, filling in blank spaces with a toolkit of functional living accessories that also shape space.

The result is a language of light wooden furniture, furnishings and fixtures that intentionally stand out against the bare backdrop provided, but unfold to accommodate the basic needs of the dwelling and create a secondary visual language in each zone.

In some places, the resulting pieces hide additional functionality – in others, they become planes that wrap overhead and inform the look and feel of the room.
