Remade Vinyl by Scott Marr

burn-carved-vintage

Australian based artist Scott Marr has created a collection of carved vinyl records. Old vinuyl 78’ records that were manufactured in the early 1900’s to play the sounds of clasical music, have now a new purpose – to be visually communicative remade with a method of carving by burn-markings whit a heated pocker, known as pypografy. The texture of Marr’s carvings on the vinyl records now results in an amazing visual reminder of an era from which they were created, but with a twist, tempering them with natural components such as fire, bones and time gave these old vinyls a touch of our time.

‘What do you do when you have a whole heap of scratched up 78’s? You carve in new information, and hope that the people understand.’ Scott Marr

The Refrigerator of the Future [video]

Could this be where the future of refrigerators is heading?

Four times smaller than a conventional refrigerator, the Bio Robot cools biopolymer gel through luminescence. Rather than shelves, the non sticky, odorless gel morphs around products to create a separate pod that suspends items for easy access. Without doors, draws and a motor 90% of the appliance is solely given over to its intended purpose. At the same time, all food, drink and cooled products are readily available, odors are contained, and items are kept individually at their optimal temperature by bio robots. The fridge is adaptable — it can be hung vertically, horizontally, and even on the ceiling. Different sizes and dimensions allow it to perfectly fit the accordant dwelling.

Spicy Storage Solution Frees Up Stacks of Cupboard Space

spice jarsPeople who do more than a casual amount of cooking are bound to have cupboards full of spice jars. There are plenty of store-bought solutions for organizing and arranging those jars, but it seems that a vertical storage method is the most space-saving of all. This DIY version was created using a sheet of stainless steel, some canning jars with one-piece caps, epoxy glue and super-strong magnets – all for a little over $100.

The wall-mounted spice rack is perfect for holding the seemingly endless collection of spice bottles that build up so easily in the kitchen. The clear jars are stored on their sides so that you can easily see what’s stored inside each one. After you affix a simple label wherever you prefer, you have a reasonably well-organized spice storage system. The particularly fussy cook can even alphabetize the jars.

As with any DIY idea, the key is to make it yours. The jars don’t have to be the ones described in the instructions, and the sheet of steel can be swapped out for the side of your fridge if you like. One helpful tip that may be especially advisable to follow: spices keep longer when stored in a cool, dark environment, so the pantry would be the perfect place to hang this spice rack. Otherwise, nontransparent jars might be a better bet than the clear variety.

Hack-Worthy Wooden Furniture Fix Using Just One Walnut

furniture fixFinding, buying or building great designs is one thing, but maintaining them can be quite another. Chips and dings in wood furniture can be especially difficult because any single-color solution (e.g. furniture marker) may be too blunt an instrument.

With that in mind, sometimes the fix for a natural furnishing is found in nature – say, in the form of a simple cracked-open walnut (particularly for those mid-toned, mid-century walnut furniture pieces, perhaps).

The moisture and variegation of the nut helps blend with natural wood tones – no perfect match is promised, but it sure is worth a shot. Tip via ApartmentTherapy.
